Composer with a multisensory approach

Anna Hakula (b. 1986) is a cross-disciplinary composer whose work emphasizes the materiality of sound and its relationship to space. The multisensory experience of art and synesthesia are integral to both Hakula's creative process and the finished works. She is interested in various intersections between the senses, between different art forms, and between the familiar and the unknown.

Hakula finds inspiration in collaborating with artists and musicians from other fields, and her works can be experienced beyond concert halls. Sound-space installations have been showcased at places such as the Hirvitalo Gallery, Tampere Architecture and Design Week, and Musiikin Aika in Viitasaari. Hakula's collaborative work with sculptor Mari Paikkarin, utilizing ceramics, titled "Resonating Space," was featured as part of the Tampere Biennale in 2022. Among Hakula's works, there are also traditional sheet music compositions that have been performed at events like Musikfest Wartin in Germany, Stockholm Samtida Musik concerts, and Finnish festivals such as Tampering and WeW!.

Anna Hakula studied composition at the Tampere Conservatory and the University of Applied Sciences under the guidance of Hannu Pohjannoro, Minna Leinonen, and Paavo Korpijaakko. She has further expanded her expertise through various courses taught by renowned instructors like Kaija Saariaho, Brigitta Muntendorf, Petri Kuljuntausta, Juhani Nuorvala, and Riikka Talvitie.
